> Accounting and Accountability Panel at the IRSPM Annual Conference 2020 in Tampere

This year, the Special Interest Group on Accounting and Accountability will be organizing its Panel at the IRSPM Annual Conference chiming in to the general conference tune: the panel themed “Accounting and accountability for the digital transformation of public services” will bring together top-notch academic work and facilitate a discourse among IRSPM attendees who are working on, or would like to keep up with latest insights into various questions of accoutning and accountability in the public sector.

The topics of the Panel will be:

  • The transformation of the role of public sector accountants in the digital era
  • The origination of new professions at the boundary of public accounting
  • The contribution of digital technologies to government transparency, accountability, engagement and collaboration with citizens
  • The role of big/smart data and analytics in public service performance management and control
  • The effect of digital technologies on accountability relationships in government entities and between government and citizens
  • The role of analytics and digital technologies in supporting evidenced-based policy
  • The transformation of financial reporting and audit assurance through datafication and AI

Once again, the Special Interest Group (SIG) on Accounting & Accountability hosted one of the IRSPM Annual Conference’s largest Panels – 22 submissions echoed the overarching theme of “Accounting for Stewardship and Innovation – Accountability for Impact”.The conference in Wellington, New Zealand, was a great opportunity for connecting with and bringing the SIG’s activities closer to colleagues in the Australasian region. We are delighted to expand our outreach and look forward to welcoming new members to our upcoming events. More on the panel at the IRSPM 2019 in Wellington here.

 

> SIG Accounting and Accountability Workshop 2020

We are happy to announce this year’s Workshop of the Special Interest Group on Accounting and Accountability addressing the topic of “Sustainable Development Goals and climate change – challenges of accounting and accountability in the public sector”. The Workshop will take place on2-3 November 2020 at theInstitute of Public Management and Territorial Governance, Aix-Marseille Université, France.

We are looking forward to be hosted by Céline DuBoys in the beautiful south of France!

> Intensifying transatlantic relations – the IRSPM Special Interest Group on Accounting and Accountability as special guest at PMRC 2019

This June, the IRSPM Special Interest Group on Accounting and Accountability has been a special guest at the Public Management Research Conference (PMRC) at the University of North Carolina School of Government. A must in public management scholars’ calendars across North America, the PMRC has been attracting more and more international colleagues over the last years and presented itself as a great opportunity to reach out to public sector accounting and accountability scholars from North America. Ileana Steccolini, the convenor of the IRSPM Special Interest Group on Accounting and Accountability, presented our group’s activities and provided an international perspective to the PMRC preconference on connecting financial management and public management. > Learn about the Accounting & Accountability Group’s work on Financial Resilience!

Members of the Special Interest Group (SIG) on Accounting and Accountability have applied the concept of resilience to explore how local governments keep operating even in adverse conditions and whether and why they are able to adapt rapidly in a crisis. Results and findings of the first research projects are available now – find out more! 

Currently, our colleagues are working on a Financial Resilience Toolkit for local governments – we will keep you posted on the results of the first practitioner workshops and the newest developments here!
